Interview with Urban Escrima Student – William Dartey

by Urban Escrima Charlie UE in martial arts

Here is a short interview with Urban Escrima student William Dartey.

Please introduce yourself, who are you and what do you do?
My names William, im 40 years of age and I work in Hotel Security.

What self defence / martial arts experience have you had previously and do you currently train in any other martial art/self-defence?
Over the years ive studied a variety of Martial Arts, I started training in Kyokushinkai Karate with Nick Da Costa in Docklands, needing more contact I moved to Muaythai and trained with Vinnie Deckon in Tottenham, whilst also working Security in Jewellery shops.

Why did you choose to train in Escrima Concepts and how does Escrima differ to what you have done before?
I was in search of a realistic system that could prepare me for defence against weapons, many traditional systems I encountered only taught stationary defence techniques, I have been training in Urban Escrima now for 2 months with Charlie Warren.

What are the main things you most enjoy about Escrima Concepts and how has this benefitted you?
What I like about Escrima Concepts is its realistic unarmed defence against weapons, the techniques can be easily applied and your reflexes quickly improve. You are also shown why certain defence techniques are not practical when an opponent changes their body position or strikes back.

What would you say to anyone thinking of starting Escrima training?
I strongly recommend to anyone, to try a session and see how you get on.
